BMX Frames

The term BMX itself means Bicycle Motocross and refers to the sport of extreme racing. These races are on a controlled dirt motocross track that consists of an inline start and various obstacles. Other BMX disciplines often involve freestyle trick moves that see riders jumping high and catching air. Good BMX bike frames needs to be able to withstand a higher than usual amount of shock and impact. It is for this reason that these frames are built differently than other traditional bicycle frames. There are many differences between a BMX bike and a standard mountain bike. Aside from strength and durability, there is a considerable size difference. BMX bikes are generally much smaller and are designed specifically for dirt track racing, allowing faster movements and manoeuvrability. Another significant difference is the emphasis on strength rather than weight, so an entry level BMX is often heavier than a similar priced mountain bike, despite being smaller, as it is made from high strength Cromoly steel. BMX bicycles have been around since the 1960s and were originally designed as pedal powered versions of the motor cross motorcycle. Made for dirt racing and jumping, the bicycle soon became popular among children (nowadays it is still very common to see children using a BMX style bike as a mode of transportation). There are many ways to distinguish a true BMX bike from daily use BMX style bikes. The first clue is the wheel size. A true BMX bike will usually have a 20-inch wheel and will sport tyres with great traction. BMX bikes are single speed, single gear machines for low maintenance and resilience in extreme riding situations. Another obvious difference is the frame. BMX bike frames are usually made from sturdy 4130 chromoly steel for its durability or aluminium for lightweight, pure racing bikes.
