Cyclocross Bike Frames
Deciding to train for a cyclocross race will often entail getting a new bike, or at the very least, modifying an existing one.
Whichever route you chose, your biggest consideration should always be the frame.
Cyclocross races are definitely a physical endurance test.
These races generally last from 30 minutes to 60 minutes and entail cycling off-road with a certain amount of carring the bike while running thrown in, which is a key factor to consider when selecting the your cyclocross bike’s frame.
The bike itself is usually based on a road bike that has been modified for cross racing. A dedicated cyclocross bike will include cantilever brakes to provide consistent stopping power when muddy. The bike will also have a wider tyre clearance for its 700c wheels to use fatter tyres with grip for dirt and mud terrains.
Cyclocross bike frames tend to use a more upright rider position than road racing machines to cope with technical off-road sections with better control.
When running on a cyclocross course, it is imperative that your bike be as light as possible, but you should also look for a frame that routes the gear and brake cables along the top of the top tube rather than underneath to make it comfortable on your shoulder.
Aluminium is always a favourite frame material for its relatively low cost that still provides a great lightweight experience. If your budget allows, a popular bike frame material is a carbon fibre and aluminium combination, balancing comfort and performance. Alternatively, for the professionals, titanium is durable and corrosion-free and provides the smoothest suspension-free ride over rough terrain.
Simply changing the tyres on your cyclocross bike will be enough to convert it back to an everyday bicycle that is comfortable, light, responsive, and ready for road use.
