Mountain Bike and Off-Road Helmets
The basic principals may be the same for both road and off-road head protection, but mountain bike helmets have specific design features that help them work better for MTB riding.
The first and most obvious difference is the inclusion of a peak at the front an XC helmet, which can work as a sun shade, rain shield and even make overhanging brush and branches less of a problem. Some are shaped lower at the back for greater head coverage, which is always welcome as your riding becomes more extreme, and dirtjump style helmets do away with the peak and even the air vents to simply offer a tougher shell.
All helmets comply to the relavent safety standard, so as the price goes up you are not really paying for more protection but generally for lighter weight, greater comfort and a more adjustable fit.
