Lycra Cycling Shorts

Adopted by cycle clothing manufacturers in the 1970s, Lycra and the many Lycra-style stretch fabrics are ideal for making cycling shorts since they can fit close to the skin to help reduce chafing whilst being woven to enhance moisture transfer away from the skin, making them breathable and comfortable.

The first stretch cycling shorts were made for racing bikers out of wool, with geniune chamois leather inserts for cushioned seat comfort and this design has developed into the high-tech, synthetic garments that are in wide use today.

Much of the extensive materials and design reasearch into cycling Lycra has been carried out over te years by Assos of Switzerland, who claim to have invented bicycle Lycra and certainly play a huge role in it's continued development, with many options now available to suit all budgets and riding styles, helping to enhance blood flow, moisture wicking and breathability whilst reducing muscle fatigue, chafing and discomfort, especially on longer rides.
